Having left Mars Hill Music back in 2013, the worship group Kings Kaleidoscope now sign over to the brilliantly named Bad Christian Music label. That’s right, we are literally featuring Bad Christian Music on The Good Christian Music Blog! Kings Kaleidoscope – Fix My Eyes

This track, ‘Felix Culpa’ sees the 10 piece band utilise their brass section to full effect by injecting their Indie Rock Worship with a high dose of Jazz that fully breaks in towards the end of the track. As if the catchy guitar riff wasn’t enough to make this an eligible best worship song of 2014, the lyrics brilliantly show the singer wrestling with God in prayer over his own sin to the extent of “fighting to be God” (Exodus 20:3) and the grace shown in Christ. Until the studio version comes, this track is a diamond in need of a little polishing, though even as it is, it’s rare to come across a song this musically brilliant as well as lyrically creative and biblical.

Lyrics:
Turn the lights on, look at what I have
See the twisted trophies of a dead man
Countless stories, tell of sin and pain
But they sing the sweetness of my savior’s grace

I’m a torn man, spirit fighting flesh
There’s a battle raging deep in my chest
But all that haunts me, all that leaves a stain
Only sings the sweetness of my savior’s grace

A fortunate fall, my sins are stories of grace to recall
A fortunate fall, I glory in my sins forgiven

Jesus bought me, and now I am His
Dying with Him, in His death I now live
All my vices, to which I’ve been chained
Only speak the sweetness of my savior’s grace

And still I’m a wicked, wretched man, I do everything I hate
I am fighting to be god, I see the and claw and thrash and shake
I have killed and stacked the dead, on a throne from which I reign
In the end I just want blood, and with His blood my hands are stained

See the God who reigns on high, He has opened His own veins
From His wounds a rushing torrent that can wash it all away

Grace upon grace, upon grace upon grace
Grace..

Genre: Rock, Jazz, Soul, R&B, Funk, Gospel, 70s

Now a veteran of gospel music, this is one of Andraé Crouch’s earlier songs originally released in 1972 on his album ‘Soulfully’. On this testimonial track, gospel music meets 70s Jazz, Soul & Funk creating an incredibly smooth, classic joint that’s aged like a beautiful wine.

Lyrics:
My world was empty before
Christ came into my life
My days were lonely and dark
Before He came and brought the light

Just like a song wanting to be sung
But there was no melody
I never thought there could be
Happiness in this world for me
Let me tell you that

Everything changed
Everything changed
When Christ stepped into my life

My world was empty before
Christ came into my life
My days were dark before he came
Before He came and brought the light

Just like a song wanting to be sung
But there was no melody
See I never thought there could be
Happiness in this world for me
Now I know that

Everything changed
Everything changed
When Christ stepped into my life

One cold and dreary night
He stepped into my life
And He brought to me the breath of spring
And then He gave me a brand new song to sing

Everything changed
Everything changed
When Christ stepped into my life

Genre: Hip-Hop, Instrumental, Jazz-Hop,

Signed to the Illect Recordings label, Imperial is a producer from the U.K. heavily influenced by the golden era of hip-hop. In his own bio, he speaks about being introduced to Hip-Hop by the old-school style group Jurassic 5, and it’s clear from a track like this that those beats inspire him in his own production. Apparently there’s currently a full length instrumental album in the works from Imperial, but until then I recommend heading over to the Illect Recordings bandcamp and listen to his other releases.

This song, taken from Christon Gray’s album Even With Evil With Me, is a beautiful song written about the singers wife. It paints a wonderful picture of how a relationship looks, and on this track Christon Gray manages to find that balance between romance and realism. A true love song, timeless and classic in sound, and a perfect addition to any Valentines Day Playlist 😉

Genre: Blues, Slow Jazz, Acoustic Piano, Christmas

This song is taken from the album Snow Angels.

Over The Rhine don’t like to be classed as a ‘Christian Band’ but they are both Christians and in a band so by that definition they are. The Ohio band Over The Rhine are the married coupling of Linford Detweiler and Karin Bergquist. They aren’t overtly vocal about their faith but in interviews they occasionally discuss it and it certainly shows through in some of their songs. This is a beautiful little blues song, it’s content clearly stated in the title, and although it may be bluesy it still has that sat beside the open fire sound to it. I love a good original Christmas song, especially one which breaks the mould and this does just that in a wonderfully stylish way.

This song is taken from The Procussions 2003 album As Iron Sharpens Iron.
The Procussions were a hip-hop trio from Colorado, consisting of Mr. J Medeiros, Resonant and Stro until 2007 when Resonant left the group. The Procussions are now hoping to continue their work as a duo, and were recently gained funding via indiegogo for a new album. So watch this space. Anyway, enjoy the song, and the weekend!

Genre: Jazz, Hip-Hop

This song is taken from the album Classic, which is a mixture of studio recordings and live recordings of Othello playing with the jazz band The Hipknotics. Unfortunately I haven’t found anywhere to purchase this album physically or mp3 format.; after searching for a while though I did find a free download for it which I was reluctant to do but it was my only option. However, a few of the songs on this album are featured on Othello’s solo release Elevator Music. So I’ll leave a link to that album underneath and if you really want the album Classic a good search on google should get you what you want.

All rights belong to Othello & The Hipknotics.

4 Days In Geneva is a 2007 concept album made by 4 individuals, firstly Christian rappers, Braille, Ohmega Watts & Surreal and then produced by DJ Idull. This album was created on a four day impromptu stop off on tour and contains some awesome old school style beats and rhymes. When you know that this album was created in just 4 days and was completely spontaneous it makes you appreciate just how good it really is. This is fresh original Hip-Hop made from 4 people who just love what they do and it’s plain to see that through this work.

All rights belong to 4 Days In Geneva.

For Theory Hazit’s latest album he has teamed up with producer Dert to create an incredible Hip-Hop album accessible to Christians and non-Christians alike. On this track For Lack of Better Word he opens about his failures and flaws and shares his story and explains how he got to where he is today. Honesty, is often rarely seen in Christian music these days so it’s great to see someone being humble and admitting their weaknesses.

This song is taken from Theory Hazit’s third album in the Lord Fire Trilogy – THREE

Genre: Acoustic, Worship, Singer/Songwriter, (Acoustic) Jazz

I heard of Jadon Lavik through seeing a review for his new album of hymns, named Roots Run Deeper (which is available for free from his website, link below), but whilst listening to his songs I found this incredible version of Amazing Grace from his first hymn album and instantly had to share it. I’ve heard so many acoustic versions of this classic hymn but I’ve never heard someone completely put their own touch to it. The brilliant guitar riff and his strong voice really make this song so great in my opinion, and I can’t wait to share some of his arrangements of Christmas hymns/songs as it gets closer to December 25th!
