Genre: Rock, Jazz, Soul, R&B, Funk, Gospel, 70s

Now a veteran of gospel music, this is one of Andraé Crouch’s earlier songs originally released in 1972 on his album ‘Soulfully’. On this testimonial track, gospel music meets 70s Jazz, Soul & Funk creating an incredibly smooth, classic joint that’s aged like a beautiful wine.

Lyrics:
My world was empty before
Christ came into my life
My days were lonely and dark
Before He came and brought the light

Just like a song wanting to be sung
But there was no melody
I never thought there could be
Happiness in this world for me
Let me tell you that

Everything changed
Everything changed
When Christ stepped into my life

My world was empty before
Christ came into my life
My days were dark before he came
Before He came and brought the light

Just like a song wanting to be sung
But there was no melody
See I never thought there could be
Happiness in this world for me
Now I know that

Everything changed
Everything changed
When Christ stepped into my life

One cold and dreary night
He stepped into my life
And He brought to me the breath of spring
And then He gave me a brand new song to sing

Everything changed
Everything changed
When Christ stepped into my life

Genre: Rock, Indie,

Taken from their debut EP ‘Sea The Same’, this track is a brilliant piece of indie rock music from the band OceanSpeak.

Lyrics:
Jealous of the stars
And I’m wondering how
They keep from falling

And oh
There one goes
Who would have known
That they could fall too

I’m a son
I’m a slave
I’m a son
I’m a slave
I’m a son
I’m a slave
And these captives
Should know their place

Oh you
You’ve been
You’ve been warned
‘Cos loving you
Is not okay
Okay

Oh and this
Is the way
That i will say
“Okay
I’m leaving you baby”

But my feet gotta walk away

Hey Jezebel, I’ve had enough
Of all your bickering and love
‘Cos after all
I wanna know

Is this the way
That i will say goodbye
To you?

Mother
Have you a son?
And this is your family
Does that make them proud of me

And Father
Have you a gun?
And can your weary eyes see the man in me
And pull the trigger?

Genre: Rock, Christmas, Carol, Indie,

Fast becoming a significant name in worship music, Citizens are back with more music, and following in the footsteps of fellow Mars Hill group King’s Kaleidoscope, this time it’s in the form of Christmas carols! On this track, the indie rock group have added their modern flair to the classic carol ‘Joy To The World‘ which opens their Christmas EP “Repeat The Sounding Joy“.

Lyrics:
Joy to the World , the Lord is come!
Let earth receive her King;
Let every heart prepare Him room,
And Heaven and nature sing,
And Heaven and nature sing,
And Heaven, and Heaven, and nature sing.

Joy to the World, the Savior reigns!
Let men their songs employ;
While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat, repeat, the sounding joy.

He rules the world with truth and grace,
And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness,
And wonders of His love,
And wonders of His love,
And wonders, wonders, of His love.

Glory to God in the highest!
Let heaven and nature sing!
Glory to God in the highest!
Repeat the sounding joy!
Glory to God in the highest!
Repeat the sounding joy!
Glory to God in the highest!

Genre: Soul, Gospel, Blues, Rock
Joined by their love of classic gospel music and ‘the source behind’ it, Eagle Rock Gospel Singers (formed in 2010) exist to revive and keep the spirit of gospel alive. They then add to this a modern influence of indie rock, folk and blues to create a unique experience, rarely heard in modern church music. This track is from their latest release – a 3 track EP titled Burn Brightly.

Lyrics:
All at once like a fire
All at once like a dream
All at once in a message that came down to me

I had searched, I was wantin’
Filled with grace was redeemed
Knew my shame was wiped away from me

Oh my Lord, I want to burn brightly
Have a fire needs to shine, shine, shine
Let me be bold, let me sing mighty
All from this little light of mine

All at once found my father
All at once knew supreme
All at once I was filled with fire so deep

Saw the light, felt the spirit
I was ready to scream
Knew my shame was wiped away from me

Give me your bad blues
My faith will not refuse
I am but a sinner, not a saint
But the good Lord rocks steady
Took me in, I was ready
Are you wanting to be born again?

I have witnessed.
I have pained
I have walked on the edges of sane
Fear my honesty
Fear His reign
Fear the Lord, He will come back again

Genre: Hip-Hop, Rap, Rock, Blues

On this track ‘Making Me More’ taken from his latest album Minorville, Derek Minor is joined by the brilliantly talented blues musician Mel Washington. By combining forces and genres, the two artists together have created a stompingly superb hip-hop anthem sure to grab the attention of many music lovers. Following the theme of the album, Derek Minor uses this track to be true to his fans and to show that at the end of the day he’s just another human with problems, hoping that Jesus is making him more. A well needed track for Christian Hip-Hop, where so often artists are put on pedestals by fans despite their honesty and humility in their music.

Genre: Rock, Indie

In anticipation of their ninth album and film of the same name – Fading West – Switchfoot have released three tracks from the forthcoming album to excite their fans. Available on iTunes and other outlets the Fading West EP features songs already made popular through the movie trailer. This track, Ba55, sees the band experiment somewhat with their sound, opting for a more mellow blues infused blend of their popular rock music.

Lyrics:
I want a fire that could burn me clean
Light the sky with my black-eyed dreams
And let my soul fly
And let my soul fly

I want a fire burning down the door
Let the wounds of my embers soar
And let my soul fly
And let my soul fly

Let it go
Yeah, let it go

Pavement beneath my feet I watch the white lines fly
Nothing between us here but the black blue sky
Suspended up in the air, like a still life
Yeah, we’re suspended up into the air, like a still life

Let it go
Let it go

I believe you’re the fire that could burn me clean x12
And let my soul fly
And let my soul fly

Pavement beneath my feet I watch the white lines fly

I want a fire that could burn me clean
I want a fire that could burn me clean
And let it go

Genre: Prog Rock, Indie

Taken from their second release Grow My Roots,  this track is ‘Rend Your Heart’ by the four-piece heavy indie/rock band Come Wind. This loud and powerful track tells a story that echoes the parable of the prodigal son, in which the band creatively use musical composition to enhance the emotions of the narrative told – best demonstrated in the bridge that builds into the climax of the reunion between son and Father.

Lyrics:

We grew together
Me and many brothers
From the second time that we were born
To our Father in heaven
Every note that was sung
Every breath in our lungs
We knew it came from him

Then we found some daughters
And they looked better than
What the author of our lives had penned
He wrote life and life abundant
I don’t know why you didn’t want it

[Chorus]
I know that you had thought that it was better
I’ll never know until I try it
The life I came to give you, it was whole
I’ll never stop until I know that I filled this hole.

He’s slow to anger
And of great kindness
A slave can now be called a son
In the morning mercy’s new again
Never exhausting love

[Chorus]

Your patient mother
How you gonna tell her that you’ve grown
You can’t hide it from her
She wants to be proud oh she wants to be proud
She wants to be proud oh she wants to be proud

Your patient Father
How you gonna stand before his throne
You can’t hide it from him
He wants to be proud oh he wants to be proud (X4)
He wants to be proud
He wants to be proud

[Chorus]

Return and when I see you I’ll come running
Oh I don’t think I’m anything but a slave
Father will take you in
You’re still his son
The cup he gives you to drink will always fill you up

SUMMER MIXTAPE VOL. ONE

If the above player doesn’t load, work, or is just too confusing, then head here to download it:
http://thegcmblog.bandcamp.com/

Dear Listener,

I hope that this mixtape exposes you to some new music – that you may discover musicians and bands you perhaps had not previously heard. If so, I encourage you to look up the artists’ other music – use this mixtape as a springboard for hearing more music.

I also hope that this mixtape shows you just how diverse Christian music is – just like the body of Christ which has created it. If there are genres on here that you wouldn’t usually listen to, don’t just skip past them, try hearing something new! I believe that each genre serves different purposes, thereby meaning that no one genre is necessarily better than another, but each has their own perks.

My prayer is that as you enjoy the music you would pass it to friends, family, colleagues, fellow church goers etc. Please pass it on, these artists work hard and their music deserves to be heard, enjoyed and supported by more Christians.

However, having said that, this music also needs to be shared with people who don’t know Christ. It’s got a great message and the world needs to hear it, so don’t be afraid to play it loud, and share it with those people you’d rather hide it from.

Also a massive thank you to all the artists that agreed to have their music given away for absolutely no cost. Please could you, as a listener, thank them with a purchase, a tweet, a like etc. and let them know it’s appreciated by you fans!

Finally, this is a SUMMER mixtape – this will be the soundtrack to my summer and I hope it becomes yours also. Thanks for listening, downloading, and supporting the blog and the artists involved.

In Christ,
Stephen Bradley,

Son of man reach out your hand & heal my tired soul
